Lead(Pb) the injuriouselement in waste or tap water which contaminates our water supply. The studies carried out in developed countries have reported different adverse symptoms in the discharge sites which includes brain disorder, risk of infertility, birth defects and skin disordersCITATION alD09 \l 1033 (Mathilde Cabral Aminata Toure, 2015) . It is poisonous in nature to biological life specially humans and animals, damages nervous system and major cause of brain disorders. It is neurotoxic and starts accumulating in blood and bones of human body CITATION Dal00 \l 1033 ( Daland R Juberg,, 2000). The chemistry of lead is similar to barium in the body specially accumulation property especially it is accumulated in the bones. CITATION Geo10 \l 1033 (Geological Survey (U.S.), 2010). The effects of lead on fetal are also well known. Since most fetal growth occurs during 90 days period. Studies showed th at increase in lead in the blood is associated with the lead contaminated water intakeCITATION GNg14 \t \l 1033 (G. Ngueta M. PrÃÆ' ©vost, 2014). According to regulations set by EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) the threshold for lead in drinking water is 0.015ppm (or 15 ppb). Lead contamination can also occur through air borne dust. Researchers found that daily exposure of children to Lead (Pb) through house dust was estimated to be 100  mg/day CITATION Kum14 \l 1033 ( Kumiko Yamasaki, et al., 2014). Lead is a toxic metal and can be removed by various different methods. This study is based on the effects of lead and removal methods. 1 Sources of Lead Lead is present everywhere around in the environment. It is present in the form of dust, in metal containers which are lead welded and from natural sources during underground travel of water CITATION YNo01 \l 1033 (Nozaki, 2001). Lead in drinking water comes from corrosion of pipes, solder and alloys of lead plumbing. Lead alloys specially brass and bronze are major sources of lead in water. Leaching of lead in water depends on the quality of water. The pure or distilled water can dissolve lead more easily as compared to tap water CITATION Amy82 \l 1033 (Amy No Clair C. Patterson, November 1982). Therefore the risk involved in the contamination of water with lead is more after the treated water enters the house hold water supply. Studies shows thatPb concentrations ranged from 1 to 52 mg/L, with a mean of 11 mg/L in in the samples taken from the taps CITATION ClÃÆ' ©12 \l 1033 (ClÃÆ' ©ment Cartier Shokoufeh Nour, 15 October 2012). Similarly there is effect of temperature of e nvironment of the concentration of lead in water. During high temperatures more lead is suspected to be leached into the water as compared to low temperature in winter seasonsCITATION GNg141 \t \l 1033 (G. Ngueta M. PrÃÆ' ©vost, December 2014). The areas in vicinity of lead acid batteries are more prone to exposure of lead and the lead levels in blood studied in different research showed the increased values CITATION Cao15 \l 1033 (Suzhen Duan, 2015). 1.2 Environmental and Health impacts of Lead Lead is one of the toxic chemicals to the human, animal and marine life. Lead proliferate in the hard tissues of human bodye.g. bones teeth etc. Studies have shown that the lead accumulation in the bones increases with the age CITATION KBE92 \l 1033 (K. BERCOVITZ D. LAUFER, 1992). In addition to mammals the deposition of lead was found in crops as well. Reports shows that plants have absorbed lead from underground water source and deposited it in seeds particularly those plants whose seed comes in consumption of humans are dangerous for health CITATION Eri15 \l 1033 (Erik Smolders Koen Oorts, 2015). Exposure of lead is usually from oral and respiratory routes. It was found that 10% of oral lead intake is stored in stomach in addition to deposition in bones CITATION Kaa15 \l 1033 (Kaare Lund Rasmussen Lilian Skytte, 2015). Children are more prone to the adverse effects of lead in their body and can absorb 50% of lead through oral intake. CITATION Mat15 \l 1033 (Sakthivel, 2015). The grown up human being may contain lead in the bones if was exposed to lead contaminated water in past. This deposition of lead in bone can also mobilize during pregnancy periods CITATION Kaa15 \l 1033 (Kaare Lund Rasmussen Lilian Skytte, 2015). Lead deposited in blood can retain in it for a month during this period it is filtered through kidneys at a very low rate. Blood level exceeding than 5 µg/dL poses health risk and medical attention is advised at level above 45 µg/dL for adults CITATION Jin15 \l 1033 (Jin-Ha Yoon Yeon-Soon Ahn, 2015). Safe level of lead in the living person depends on age. Children should be cared when level rises above 45 µg/dL. Higher level of lead can cause severe changes in brain functions leading to coma and death (NH Department of Environmental Sciences). Long term exposure to lead can cause joint pain, metallic taste, muscle pains, wrist drop and foot drop like symptoms CITATION Jin15 \l 1033 (Jin-Ha Yoon Yeon-Soon Ahn, 2015). Reproductive and development effects caused by lead are well known. Lead can easily travel through placenta and reach fetus where it can cause miscarriage, still birth and abortion CITATION Xij15 \l 1033 (Xijin Xu Xiaojuan Chen, 2015). It was found that lead has adverse effect on growth of fetus. Weight of fetus is also affected by presence of lead. During the latter stages this lead can affect the mental abilities and intelligence in the new born baby CITATION Jac14 \l 1033 (Jack Caravanos Russell Dowling, 2014). The effects are long lasting and come into notice after several years of birth. "I have therefore selected Lead(Pb) as the pollutant, to be treated/removed from water, in view of its environmental and healthimpacts on human lives, as described above.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ 2 Removal of Lead from water Lead can be removed from water by implying different chemical and physical methods. Chemical methods usually imply some sort of reaction with the lead to make it insoluble in water CITATION Nih04 \l 1033 (Nihal Bekta ¸s Serdar Kara, 2004). Physical methods utilize the techniques of removing lead by filtering out the element using semi permeable membrane like Reverse Osmosis. Advance research on some other methods like adsorption on selective adsorbents is also in progress and will be discussed in detail. 2.1 Conventional Method of Lead Removal Conventional method if used for removal of lead can be useful to an extent and are unable to remove lead completely from water. Few of them as discussed below 2.1.1 Ion-Exchange for Lead Removal Lead is present in the form of Pb+2 in water CITATION Kun15 \l 1033 (Kunashegaran Hamsawahini, 2015).Lead is made to react with chloride ions to form lead chloride which is water insoluble and can be further removed by simple sand filtration method. Lead removal by this method depends on few factors like interaction of lead ions in ion-exchanger unit, functional groups, temperature and cross linking. If complexes in the solution form it will further complicate the ion exchange process CITATION Zbi12 \l 1033 (Zbigniew Hubicki and Dorota KoÅ‚odyÅ„ska , 2012). Limitation of ion exchange method involves the slow kinetics which is the result of poor wetting ability and exposed surface area of aqueous solutions. This results in loss of anions which are responsible for removal of lead. Inter-polymerization technique can be used for improvement in ion exchange CITATION Ryo15 \l 1033 (Ryoko M. Uda, 2015). 2.1.2 Reverse Osmosis Reverse osmosis system utilizes a semipermeable mem...

Mars Essay - 1330 Words

MARS, also known as molecular absorbent recirculating system, originally was a machine designed to give patients suffering from chronic liver failure a bridge to transplant and increase their chances of survival. MARS has proven to be quite successful among this group of patients. â€Å"MARS was first approved by the FDA in 2005 for use in drug overdoses and then received an additional indication for use in hepatic encephalopathy due to decompensated chronic liver disease in 2012.† (Hannish, et al., 2017) MARS is generally used in patients with a primary hepatic failure and not liver failure due to systemic illness. However this still leaves the group of patients diagnosed with acute liver failure as a result of trauma, poisoning, or overdose.†¦show more content†¦It has also been used on patients who have overdosed on cocaine, amphetamines, and mdma but is not widely used on patients suffering from an overdose on those specific illicit drugs. Nurses and doctors will immediately assess the patient and run labs to determine the extent of liver damage and whether they qualify for MARS therapy. These labs include, serum lactate, Creatinine, albumin, AST, ALT, INR, PTT, and ammonia levels. Patients are also placed on continuous EEG monitoring. MARS is an albumin-based therapy whereby albumin dialysis is the process of cleansing the blood of protein-bound toxins by exposing the blood to an albumin dialysate and, thus extracting the toxins from blood protein carriers. The reason behind this phenomenon is a direct result of filtering blood with albumin bound proteins in an albumin solution. This forces the toxins to separate from the albumin in the blood and essentially cleanse the patients blood of all the poison or drug (Mcready,2009). The biological toxins that build up within the bloodstream are detrimental to the other organs and most often result in multi organ failure. Ridding the body of these toxins as quickly as possible increases a patients chances for survival. McCready (2009) describes the purpose of MARS, as an Albumin dialysis for the treatment of liver failure. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Theory Integration

Advantages/Disadvantages One disadvantage of theory integration the possibility of the wrong mixture of theories by criminologist which could increase the odds of a person gravitating towards criminality increase (Frame, 2009). Another disadvantage with integration is variables get missed and vital information is left out. Finally, integration can lead to misconceptions of theories. The advantage of integration different theories is that decreases repetition where two theories are relaying the same message with different opinions. Another advantage is that integration brings consistency to theories Future of Theory Integration Theory integration requires goals in order to make an impact on the future of criminology. According to Muftic (2009), the first goal of integration is theory reduction. Reducing the number of theories that basically explain the same behavior reduces the competition amongst researchers as well as inconsistency in theories. A second goal is to increase explained variance. Increasing the explained variance allows for more support of a theory as it is related to crime prevention and treatment. As with most theories there are advantages and disadvantages. Theory integration has advantages that will play an important part in the future of criminology. One advantage is the use of linking propositions such as sequential integration. This theory integration links the immediate cause of crime to a more distant cause of crime and that to an even moreShow MoreRelatedThe Role Of Criminology And The Future Of Criminology1583 Words   |  7 Pagescriminologist have co nsidered theory integration important for the future of criminology due to the flourishment of crimes in society. News Story Review for Unbiased Journalism-myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theNews Story Review for Unbiased Journalism. Answer: The news event being addressed for this study is the recent case of ball tampering conducted by three Australian players and the punishment dealt to them. Both the news stories revolve around the unethical practices by the Australian players. The themes and ideas that are relevant to the unit are the news value, unbiased journalism and credibility of the newspaper[1]. Two news stories from CNN and The Guardian have been referred to for this paper. However, both the reports addresses the same issue but from a different news angle. One addresses the unethical practices conducted by the Australian players and the other is much concerned about the future of the Australian cricket team. Both news stories address the public sentiment and are impartial in their addressing of the topic. The report from CNN addresses the issue that even though the Australian team is famous for its groundbreaking performance, yet the recent scandal has severely impacted the integrity of the Australian cricket team and asks whether it is the appropriate time to bring about more strict changes regarding the punishment for unfair and unethical practices in the sport[2]. The report from Guardian addresses the issue from the viewpoint of the Australian sentiment and states how the ban imposed on the three accused players should be reduced, according to the statement presented by the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) to the Cricket Australia[3]. Both the news stories address the same topic, however they differ in the perspective through which it would be viewed. One news story is impartial and covers both public opinion and statements of the Australian cricket administration in its reporting while the other in its reporting, states the emotional and sentimental turmoil that the Austra lian cricket scenario is currently experiencing. Regardless, the CNN news story compiles public reaction and statements in its report relating to the topic, but The Guardians news report is only based on the ACAs statements to the CA and their feelings and remarks regarding the ban. Both the news stories are based on recent and relevant information, which is unusual in nature and are based on proven facts. The reporters too have been impartial and unbiased in their reporting of the event. Cricket is a global sport, which finds its appeal among individuals from all over the world. The Australian cricket team had always prided itself being a dominant force in the sport. However, the recent acts committed by 3 renowned players, involving the Captain and the Vice-Captain came as a shock and disgraceful act to many. Therefore, the most relevant news value that can be considered for both news stories is the value of impact[4]. The news stories are based on a event that had a great impact over the global base of cricket fans, is negative in nature, based on an unexpected act and is not a event which occurs frequently. Apart from this, the news story found a great appeal to the worldwide audience and is easy to grasp as well. Thus, the consideration of all of these char acteristics, imply the presence of the impact value of news story[5]. Both news stories somewhat present the same event and thus share the same news value but The Guardians news story has a presence of human interest value as well. The news article by the CNN compiles its report with the statements made by the Australian Captain (now former) Steve Smith in the press conference, along with statements from the former Australian Prime Minister and a Network Ten cricket commentator. It also reports the statements made by the former Australian cricket legends and cricket journalists as well. The report from The Guardian is compiled only on the basis of the statements issued by the ACA president, who spoke on behalf of the entire ACA. These resources play a significant role in the journalists construction of the story since their reports are inclusive of remarks from prominent sources of authority and relevance. A good news story is supposed to include the opinions of individuals who are known to the public and are also in a suitable position of power, making them more accurate, reliable and significant to the audience/readers, and both of the news stories follow this rule in their reporting style[6]. In recent times, the sources of news have grown in abundance. There is a rising trend of printing news regarding the information gained from confidential or anonymous sources and whistleblowers. The social media networks like Facebook and Twitter have become great sources of news as well. However, the most reliable sources of news are considered to be the following:- Press conferences Statements made by celebrities and politicians (or prominent and famous individuals) Press releases News published by the Associated Press Content posted on official and government websites Relevant files (can be later used as evidence) At present, Twitter too can be considered a reliable source since news stories arise from the tweets posted by the prominent people themselves, and can be checked later on[7]. All of these above stated sources are considered believable by the people due to their assurance of providing accurate information and facts. Public sphere is a concept that states that the exchange and discussion of opinions between two people may lead to the formation of a common judgment. A proper news story is supposed to report the news in a manner that it affects the thought process of the reader and generates an opinion in his head. The news story reported by CNN is related to public sphere since it addresses the news in a way that is less in facts but is more based on the opinions of people regarding the event that occurred. The news from The Guardian addresses the same issues and affects the psychology of the reader. The reader may either feel outraged and form an opinion that a more strict punishment should have been imparted, or he may form the opinion that even though the players were found guilty, they are remorseful for their actions and a long term ban would ruin their career as well as lives. However, after reading both the news stories, one forms the judgment that the players were wrong in their actions an d have accepted their mistakes openly, along with receiving their punishment[8]. Thus, due to these reasons, it can be said, that news media plays a public sphere role in the reporting of this issue.
